A past chair of the Women Law Teachers Section of the Association of American Law Schools, Professor Ireland practiced law antitrust litigation in Chicago, and worked in the Washington, D.C. office of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas. While on the faculty at Washington University, she served as associate dean, and as a coordinator and founder of the undergraduate Women's Studies major. She advised the Senate Judiciary Committee on Federal Judicial Appointments as an at-large representative of the Federation of Women Lawyers Judicial Selection Panel (1973-83). She was a member of the editorial board of the University of Chicago Law Review.

Ireland chairs the Legislation Committee of the National Association of Women Lawyers and serves on its Board of Directors.  Her lecture engagements include the U.S. Department of the Navy, the Association of American Law Schools, Women's Bar Association, National Women and Law Conference, and political science and economics associations.

Ireland has taught at San Diego State University and Victoria University in New Zealand. She has also taught law-related subjects and film subjects at the University of California, San Diego in the Department of Communications.
