Law, Medicine & Public Policy Survey of Health Law
LAW, MEDICINE & PUBLIC POLICY (SEM, 2 units) In this course, we will attempt to understand the nature of how difficult health delivery considerations and issues interact with law that result in particular types of public policy. Practical considerations that include, but are not limited to, the law, health provider methods of practice, economic and social incentives and disincentives, and public choice will be assessed and explored to provide an understanding of how the particular health law and policy became extant, the difficulties with such law and policy, and what solutions can address the issues raised. The topics covered by this course relate to current issues in health care law and policy, broadly construed. SURVEY OF HEALTH LAW (2 units) This class will provide a broad overview of the health delivery system in the United States as well as review important policy issues associated with each topic. Areas of coverage include legal medicine topics such as medical malpractice, informed consent, and the provider-patient relationship; the health care insurance structure, including private insurance and managed care; and modern delivery considerations, such as employer-employee considerations, fraud and abuse, and alternative dispute resolution.
