SofTest Mock Exams - California Western School of Law
SofTest Mock Exams

We have a number of Mock Exam files available for download with SofTest. The mock exams are used to test your installation of SofTest, and to practice using SofTest.

Note: The mock exam files are for testing the SofTest program, and for practice, only. They may not be used to take a real exam. CWSL will not accept any exam taken using the mock exam files. Any exams taken using the mock exam files will not be accepted, and will not be graded.

There are three mock exam files available:

  • Mock_Exam_2013-14.xmzx
  • Mock_Exam_2013-14_MC.xmzx
  • Mock_Exam_Non_Secure.xmzx

Mock_Exam_2013-14.xmzx is the main mock exam file. It is a secure exam, and it is used to test your installation of SofTest. You can use any four digit number for the exam number. No password is needed. This file has limited downloads, so you may not see it on your list.

We recommend that you use Mock_Exam_2012-13.xmzx after you have installed SofTest to make sure that SofTest is installed and running properly on your computer. We also recommend that you run it once more a day or two before your first exam to refresh your memory as to how SofTest works, and how the word processor works. You can download the mock exams more than once, but you can only download the real exam files once.

Mock_Exam_2012-13_MC.xmzx is a mock exam used to simulate a multiple choice exam in SofTest. We are not using this feature, so you can ignore this one.

Mock_Exam_Non_Secure.xmzx is a non-secure exam file. You can use any four digit number for the exam number.
This can be used as a study aid. Your computer will not go into secure exam mode when using this file. Using the non-secure mock exam, you can type a practice exam, then copy the results to your favorite word processor. This way, you can practice taking an exam using the same word processor you will use for your finals, but then look over your anwers later. Once you exit the exam, you will not be able to retrieve your work, so make sure you do the copy and paste before you exit.

If you have any questions about using the mock exam files, please contact your computer technician:

History

Up to version 10 of SofTest, there was a Practice Exam function built into SofTest. Using the practice exam, you could choose to run a secure or non-secure exam. You didn't have to download the mock exam file, just click the button maked "Practice Exam". The secure exam would lock your computer into secure mode, just like the real exam. The non-secure mode would not lock your computer into secure mode. This was handy if you just wanted to check out the word processor.

The main difference between the mock exam and the practice exam, was that you didn't have to download a mock exam file for the practice exam, and the practice exam would not upload an answer file. Many schools, including CWSL, wanted a way to test the upload process. So ExamSoft started creating the mock exams. These were dummy exam files that did everything the real exam files did. We told students to use the mock exams to test the systems, and see what the process of taking an exam looked like. Many students liked the idea of doing practice exams in SofTest, but some wanted to be able to print our their practice essays and look them over later. The mock exam was a secure exam, so you couldn't print out your work, or look at it later.

Some students found a solution in the non-secure practice exam. The students could practice taking the exam using the SofTest word processor, then copy the text to Word or Word Perfect before exiting SofTest. This worked fine until SofTest version 11. With version 11, ExamSoft figured that since everyone was using the mock exam, they didn't need the practice exam function anymore. So they eliminated the practice exam from SofTest, leaving just the mock exam. We received several requests from students to have the non-secure practice exam restored. So to meet this need, we have created the non-secure mock exam file.

So there you have it. Now you know why there is a secure mock exam, and a non-secure mock exam. Let us know if this is helpful to you. If you find the non-secure mock exam to be helpful, or if you run out of mock exams and need more, send email to labhelp@law.cwsl.edu, and let us know.
