About DOMA
Passed by Congress on September 21, 1996, the Defense of Marriage Act is the common name for Public Law No. 104-199, 110 Stat. 2419. The federal legislation defined marriage as a legal union exclusively between one man and one woman. It also provided that no state should be required to recognize same-sex relationships as a marriage, including cases where a relationship is recognized as a marriage in another state.
