SAN DIEGO, February 25, 2011 - This weekend, California Western School of Law took top honors at the American Bar Association's regional Law Student National Representation in Mediation Competition, with a championship and second-place finish.

California Western successfully challenged teams from Pepperdine University School of Law, Thomas Jefferson School of Law, and the University of California, Berkeley, earning top honors and a chance to represent Region 9 at the National Finals in April.

Top Two Teams
California Western's top teams went head-to-head in the final round of competition, guaranteeing the law school a berth at nationals.

The school's first-place team included students Anastasia Martin (3L) and Adam Stone (2L). Their peers, who finished second after a formidable final round, were Amy Hsiao (2L) and Dwayne Crenshaw (2L).

The teams were coached by Genevieve A. Suzuki '08 and Jack Green, former senior vice president and general counsel at Converse, Inc.

California Western is particularly proud of this top-two finish; this was the school's first entry into this competition in several years, and the win presented an unexpected upset to longtime champions Arizona State University.

ABA Mediation Competition
The Law Student National Representation in Mediation Competition is sponsored by the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution. It is designed to acquaint law student participants with advocacy skills in alternative dispute resolution processes, specifically mediation.

Each year, 10 regional competitions are held throughout the U.S. in late February or early March. The winners of each regional competition are invited to compete at the National Finals.

California Western competes for national honors April 13-15 in Denver.

Texas Young Lawyers Association Trial Competition
This weekend, California Western sent two additional teams to the regional Texas Young Lawyers Association Trial Competition at La Verne College of Law.  Students Vanessa Gerard (3L), Sandra Gotlaufa (2L), Diana John (3L), and Angela Shimizu (2L) represented California Western. Both teams advanced to the finals.

Developing Real-World Skills
Participation in trial teams and other oral advocacy competitions at California Western offers students the opportunity to develop real-world litigation skills through hands-on experience. By combining a traditional, broad-based legal education with a focus on practical training, students are better prepared to enter the legal profession.
