SAN DIEGO, April 16, 2010 -
Last month, California Western School of Law placed third at the California State Bar Association Environmental Section's 11th Annual Negotiation Competition. This was California Western's first year competing in the event.
Twenty-six teams from schools around the state vied for top honors. University of California, Berkeley finished first, followed by University of California, Hastings and California Western.
California Western was the only Southern California law school to make it to the finals.
Tale of Two Teams
California Western sent two teams of students to the competition. Diana Bradasch (2L) and Ryan Scarpa
(3L) were on a team, as were Jeffrey Dobin (3L) and Melissa King (3L).
Daria Brovchenko (3L), also a team member, was instrumental in preparing the teams to compete.
The team of Bradasch and Scarpa won third place, edging out University of San Francisco for a top three finish.
California Western is particularly proud of this accomplishment, given that two of the top four law school teams have premier environmental law programs.
The teams were coached by Assistant Deputy City Attorney Dan Rawlins and Tracy L. Nation '90, a seasoned trial and litigation attorney.
"Both of our teams were outstanding because of their hard work, intellect, and ability to think on their feet," says Nation. "They competed with the best of the best and demonstratedly were superior among their peers."
