Spring 2013 Registration

Spring 2013 Registration will re-open Tuesday, November 13 at 8:00 AM for all students.

Spring classes begin Wednesday, January 2.

Registration materials, course descriptions and other information are listed below. So that we can update our database with address changes, changes to projected graduation date and other information, please print out, complete, and return the Student Info Update Form to the Registrar's Office. This form is also available at the Registrar's Office.

Full-time students are expected to enroll in 10 -17 units and part-time students can enroll in 8 -11 units. You are not allowed to exceed the maximum units.

STEPPS

Scholarly Writing Requirement (SWR): If you are taking a course for SW credit, you must also be enrolled in the Legal Scholarship Training Seminar (course #240). If you will be satisfying the SW requirement by taking a scholarly writing option course, i.e., a course designated as SW/OP, SW/EO or EX/SW, you need to advise the professor that you are taking the course for SW credit.

Independent Study: If you are planning to do an independent study, pick up an “Independent Study Petition” form from the Registrar’s Office. Take the form to the Professor who will be supervising the independent study for signature, then submit the form to Dean Aceves' Office. Once approved by Dean Aceves, the form will be forwarded to the Registrar’s Office and you will be enrolled in the Independent Study.

Information Regarding Registration for Trial Practice

If you are planning to take trial practice in the future please read this notice carefully!

Upper division law students at California Western present jury trials as their final assignment in Trial Practice. Students present a case from beginning to end, including opening statements, direct and cross examination and closing arguments. They then request a jury to return a verdict. After the verdict is delivered, the jury has the opportunity to critique the students' performances and offer them suggestions on how to improve. We would like to know if you would be willing to serve as a juror in one trial. The trials will take place the last week of summer classes, exact dates TBA at 5:00 p.m. and last approximately four hours (including deliberations and critique). Note: Jury service is a prerequisite for taking Trial Practice. To register for Trial Practice in the future, you will have had to have served as a juror in a Trial Practice trial. Please call Laurie Farid or come to room 2E-7 to sign up for juror service. The deadline to sign up is TBA. If you have any questions, please contact Laurie in the STEPPS office at (619) 235-3906.

In order to enroll in Trial Practice, you must serve as a juror in a trial practice trial before you register to take the course. PLEASE NOTE: Jury trials are scheduled during the week prior to the final week of classes and last approximately four (4) hours. If you have not yet completed this requirement but want to take Trial Practice next trimester, sign up for one of the trials this trimester. This will ensure that you will be eligible for the class during the next registration cycle.

NOTE: There are specific attendance requirements for Trial Practice that apply to both enrolled students and wait-listed students.

First-year students who plan to take Trial Practice in their third trimester must have a minimum grade point average of 76 at the time of registration.

Evidence is also a prerequisite for Trial Practice. It may also be taken concurrently. Also, please note that the Trial Practice Lecture (#785) is a component of the course and must be taken in conjunction with the small section.
