The Intelligent Home[1]

by Ulrike Ott

INTRODUCTION:

Did I lock the door? Did I switch the iron off? How often have you asked yourself these and similar questions?

With the Intelligent Home (IH), it will not be a problem because a homeowner will be able to check for himself despite his location. Moreover, people with specific software will be able to check the on-goings of their homes, open and close the windows, get regular software updates[2] and a lot more.

HOW WILL THIS HAPPEN:

Single home appliances will be connected into one system, which in itself will be connected[3] to the Internet. The home system[4] will then be controlled through Internet access or through a cell phone which is internet compatible, for example a generation of I-mode cell phones. IBM has already invented a home net center, which enables the different appliances to become connected[5].

TECHNOLOGICAL PROBLEMS:

However, today’s appliances are neither the same brand nor the same technology which enables the consumer to connect them with each other. A new technology is needed to make all appliances compatible. Loewe and Siemens have produced appliances which have an integrated internet access[6] like freezers, washing machines, and other home appliances which are capable of being connected to the Internet.

TECHNOLOGICAL CONCLUSIONS:

A so called “PowerLine Modem” acts as an interface[7]. Thus, the appliances only have to be connected to electricity.

With the evolution of “smart” home devices, various home controlled appliances have been developed, although these different solutions are exclusive[8]. The integration of all existing technologies and communication protocols is possible through the OSGi-certified[9] service delivery platform. Devices produced from different manufactures are able to communicate with each other and the external world. This platform is independent, secure and extensible.

It allows White and Brown Goods manufactures and service providers to offer high value application and services, including maintenance and control, automatic data transfer as well as the secure delivery of information and entertainment service. Any kind of software and data package can be remotely delivered to the end devices and at the same time, error notifications or maintenance-related information can be transmitted to the manufacturer or service provider[10].

This Smart Home Edition contains the Gateway Software and Remote Management Software[11].

CONSUMER ADOPTION:

Through the IH, one can attain a safer living environment as mentioned above. The appliances are plug & play and the needed software is already implemented so that the appliances are consumer friendly and not a lot more expensive than now. Given that Internet access is in nearly every household and not expensive to have, externally transferring data will not be a problem. This technology is interesting for singles, older people, females and males as demonstrated in one of the market studies showed[12].

The data will be transferred through the Internet and the appliances are owned by the consumer. That is the reason why there will be no entrance barriers from this side. As a result, the unemployment rate will not increase and this new technology will make everybody’s life a lot more flexible and comfortable. The only issue at hand for the consumer is safeguarding his personal information. Due to the fact that data is transferred through the Internet, individuals like Hackers, could potentially acquire information about the IH. This kind of insecurity currently exists as when credit cards are used in the Internet but this does not stop people from doing so.

CONCLUSION

There are neither legal problems nor technological problems. The IH will bring a lot more comfort into everyone’s live as well as it will make live easier and safer.
