Hannah Brenner Johnson -Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Mark Weinstein -Director of the Clinical Externship Program, Ruth Briscoe -Program Administrator, Clinical Externship Program

The Clinical Externship Program is an essential component of the curriculum at California Western School of Law. The Program builds upon the strong practice foundation students receive in the second year STEPPS Program. The 13-week program gives third year students the opportunity to earn academic credit for legal work in not-for-profit agencies, private law offices, courts, corporations or government agencies. In these settings, students participate in legal work and acquire useful insights and experiences toward building their careers. The program develops and promotes the confidence, problem solving skills, and professionalism that lead to becoming practice ready attorneys.

COVID 19 Information

Given the current crisis created by COVID 19, the school’s primary objective is to protect its students in the most prudent way possible. For the Fall Term 2020, both the students and the supervising attorneys may be subject to stay at home orders. This condition may create fundamental changes in the way that supervising attorneys and their students interact. However, the school is committed to maintaining the academic integrity of the program in spite of the necessity of communicating remotely. If and when restrictions are eased by the various governmental entities, the Director of the Clinical Externship Program, the supervising attorney, and the student may agree to modify this remote arrangement in accordance with local health officials’ orders and guidance.
