Our Master of Laws in US Law (LLM) and Master of Comparative Law (MCL) Program is about 40 years old, and has over 500 alumni all around the world, many of whom stay in contact and refer their friends to us.
We have two small group introductory courses that are solely for LLM students where you can directly interact with professors who understand the challenges of learning in a very different system. And the director of the LLM program will be your personal mentor and assist in course selection. But you are also invited to take any courses from the school-wide curriculum. If you choose to, you can specialize by taking courses in an area of concentration and earn a notation of that on your diploma.
Many of our LLM alumni choose to stay an extra year for Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT is authorized by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for one year full-time practical training in the student’s area of study.
Successful LLM students may apply to join our JD (Juris Doctor) program. If accepted, the credits earned during their LLM studies will count toward their JD degrees.
Our LLM/MCL program is the ideal size, with 10-20 students per year, to ensure that each student is personally supported by the program's director and administrator. And while our LLM students become friends with many of our US students, we also provide a special student lounge on campus for only LLM students to relax in.
As an LLM/MCL student you will be welcomed into student organizations along with US (JD) students. Our JD student body is one of the most diverse in the US, and as the oldest law school in San Diego, we have many alumni working in all positions throughout the city. So we welcome you to explore the beautiful warmth of San Diego and the friendly warmth of our CWSL community.
