Q & A

When did you decide to pursue a law degree?

Every Friday night from the age of 10, my family would meet for dinner at this Mexican food restaurant. My cousin who was a District Attorney for the City of San Diego would come and tell me about all of her cases. At this point, I developed an interest in law and decided I wanted to be a lawyer some day. After doing an internship with the City Attorney of National City, I dedicated myself to becoming a lawyer.

What's the main reason you chose to attend California Western School of Law?

The main reason I chose to attend California Western was because of its ranking and status within San Diego and how close it was to home for me. When I was an intern, a lot of the practicing attorneys I would meet came from California Western and had nothing but good things to say about it.

How hard is law school? Is it more or less work than you thought?

I definitely underestimated how hard law school really is. I thought I would breeze through law school, but have found it extremely hard. The amount of hours I put into studying is unreal, but so worth it. I work a part-time job as a manager of a small business, but have learned how to master my time management. Although it seems like the end of the world at some times, it is so rewarding after studying so hard and feeling like you finally fully understand a concept of law.

What is some of your previous professional experience? How did that experience help you decide to go to law school?

My previous professional experience in the field is working for an intern with the City Attorney of National City last summer. It was the best experience I have ever had! My supervisor was amazing and taught me so much. She made me excited to attend law school and eventually become a lawyer. I give so much credit to her and that internship in influencing me to go to law school here at Cal Western.

What advice would you give to a new law student? What would you have done differently if given the chance?

Take everything day by day. Law school is a whole new ballgame and unlike anything you have ever done. Some days will be harder than others, but remember it is all worth it in the end. Those days when you just want to quit, don’t. It may seem impossible, but think about everyone else that has made it through. You can do it. With the time and effort, you will succeed.
