The Professor William C. and Sally B. Lynch Scholarship Endowment

Bill and Sally Lynch

The Professor William C. and Sally B. Lynch Scholarship Endowment has been established through the generosity of the Lynch family in memory of Professor Lynch and his beloved wife, Sally. The scholarship will support second-year students who have shown the greatest academic improvement after their first-year studies. As an endowment, it will benefit our most promising and hardest working students in Bill and Sally’s name for generations to come.

This scholarship will serve as a permanent tribute to both Bill and Sally, who were married 61 years and together 68, until Sally’s passing in September 2019. Sally was the light of Bill’s life and was an equally beloved member of the California Western family.

Professor Lynch was fiercely dedicated to California Western, and he cared deeply for his students. In his own words, “I made a promise that every student was going to have a good experience. I was going to ask a lot of them, but they would learn a lot and they would get a big return.”

He had an extraordinary legal and law teaching career, including 22 years as a judge advocate in the U.S. Navy, earning the rank of Captain and the Legion of Merit award for his international treaty work while serving as legal counsel to the Secretary of the Navy in one of his last assignments. In addition to teaching at California Western, he served as associate dean, coached the interscholastic National Moot Court Team, and tutored individuals for the bar. He was awarded the law school’s “Favorite Teacher Award” no fewer than 10 times. Professor Lynch leaves behind a rich and vibrant legacy, having inspired his many students to “Rise to the Call of Greatness.” As he said, “I never thought I would teach until I was 84, but I loved this school and I loved teaching. I truly liked my students and I think they liked me. It was a very happy arrangement.”

In lieu of flowers, the Lynch family has requested that those who feel so inclined make a donation payable to California Western School of Law, in support of the Professor William C. and Sally B. Lynch Scholarship Endowment, and send to the CWSL Philanthropy Department, 225 Cedar Street, San Diego, CA 92101-3046. You may also make your gift online by using the “Give Now” button below.
