William R. Slomanson ’74 has been honored with the highly prestigious Bernard E. Witkin Award for Excellence in Education.
Slomanson, who is a professor of law at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, received the award at the San Diego Law Library’s annual foundation dinner on October 8. It was presented by U.S. District Court Judge Anthony J. Battaglia ’74, who was a classmate of Slomanson at California Western.
“I am thrilled that Bill Slomanson is being recognized for his contributions to legal education,” said Judge Battaglia. “He is a remarkable professor, scholar, mentor, author, and all around nice guy. He is everything you'd hope for in defining someone who has made a career of excellence in legal education.”
"I was incredibly humbled by Judge Victor Bianchini's award nomination, and classmate Anthony Battaglia's introduction,” Slomanson said. “This award validated various features of my long-term teaching career—none more so than scholarship—in an era when some law schools have mistakenly devalued its role in today's legal education.”
Slomanson is known not only for his prolific scholarship, but for his innovative teaching in the area of civil procedure, and his international teaching, especially in Kosovo, where he is a visiting professor at Pristina University.
He feels his own legal education at California Western was an invaluable experience.
“The California Western phase of my life thoroughly prepared me to enter my professional worlds of lawyering and legal education,” said Slomanson. "My J.D. schooling was an incredibly positive experience for a number of reasons,” says Slomanson. “I immediately felt at home, with the large number of fellow vets who gravitated to California Western during the Vietnam era. And as our then Dean Castetter would no doubt say, ‘I never met a law student I didn't like.’”
About the Witkin Award:
The Witkin Award is presented annually to honor members of the San Diego legal community for civic leadership and excellence in teaching, practice, enactment, or adjudication of the law. The Witkin Fund is used for the benefit of the San Diego Law Library. The Witkin Award Dinner is, appropriately enough, the primary fundraiser for the fund since the Witkin Awards celebrate members of the legal community and their good works.
