118 CWSL Alums Named to San Diego Super Lawyers Lists

2020 Super Lawyers

One hundred and eighteen California Western alumni have been named to the 2020 San Diego Super Lawyers lists, as reported in a recently published roll of outstanding lawyers by Super Lawyers magazine.

Craig McClellan ’76, founding partner of the McClellan Law Firm and listed among the Top 10 and Top 50 of San Diego Super Lawyers, attributes this to the admissions process and educational excellence.

“The large number of California Western graduates named to the Super Lawyers and Rising Stars lists tells me that Cal Western excels at recognizing the potential for success in its selection of students for admission,” says McClellan. “It also tells me that Cal Western has the educational excellence and know-how to nurture and develop that potential into real success.”

CaseyGerry partner, Gayle Blatt ’85, who was named to both the Top 25 Women and Top 10 Super Lawyers lists, is not surprised to see the number of Cal Western graduates named to the Super Lawyers lists.

“The school’s long time focus on providing a superior education, opportunities for practical experience, and graduating practice-ready attorneys, provides all alumni with the tools to excel in their chosen areas of concentration,” says Blatt. “A Cal Western education also emphasizes the importance of practicing law at the highest ethical level, the value of a strong work ethic, and commitment to the community.”

Each year, Super Lawyers selects attorneys using a patented selection process that involves peer nominations, independent research, and peer evaluations.

California Western’s emphasis on experiential learning is a significant factor in turning out practice-ready lawyers, says Steve Bronson ’06, named to the 2020 Super Lawyers list.

“California Western’s practical way of teaching, based on how the legal profession operates now—and not 50 or 100 years ago—gave me an edge in taking what I learned, and efficiently transitioning to practice,” states Bronson. “Hands-on, real-world legal experience during my time at CWSL helped me hit the ground running.”

These words were echoed by 2020 Super Lawyer listee Colin Walshok ’07, a partner at Wingert Grebing, as he also recognized the quality of the Cal Western faculty.

“California Western has professors that prepare you for the practice of law by instilling the importance of attention to detail, hard work, and preparation,” says Colin Walshok. “In addition, Cal Western’s moot court teams, the California Innocence Project, and Law Review all give you a jump start on the practice of law by giving you real-world and critical experience in oral advocacy and writing.”

Alreen Haeggquist ’02, a Managing Partner of Haeggquist & Eck, LLP, also singled out Cal Western’s faculty as being instrumental in the success of its graduates.

“Cal Western’s top-notch faculty, who taught us how to be creative problem-solvers, as well as the law school’s numerous leadership opportunities, paved the way for the success of so many of its graduates,” says Haeggquist.

Named to the Super Lawyers’ 2020 Rising Stars list, which recognizes no more than 2.5 percent of attorneys in each state, Janice Walshok ’08, a shareholder at Pettit Kohn, says California Western’s recognition of diversity and inclusion was especially important to her.

“California Western takes a holistic approach to teaching the practice of law, which includes much more than critical and strategic legal analysis,” she says. “Reputation, professionalism, and civility were emphasized. It welcomed diversity and promoted inclusion. These are qualities that I valued, and still do, as a person, a wife and mother, a woman of color, and an attorney.”

The Super Lawyers’ lists are published each year in Super Lawyers magazines and other leading city and regional magazines as well as newspapers across the country.

California Western recognizes below all of its alumni who were named to the 2020 San Diego Super Lawyers or Rising Stars lists. Congratulations to all.
