California Western School of Law and the nonprofit Air Law Institute announce the creation of the Air Law Institute Collaborative Center, to be housed at California Western.
Following the success of the inaugural Air & Space Law Symposium in 2014, which was presented by the Air Law Institute and hosted by California Western, the two have established a center of excellence in air and space law on the campus of San Diego's oldest law school.
The primary mission of the Air Law Institute Collaborative Center will be to plan and manage a symposium on the subject of air and space law each year, portions of which will be held at the law school. This year's symposium is scheduled for March 12-14 at California Western and the San Diego Air & Space Museum. The Air Law Institute and the law school are also exploring offering elective courses in the field of aviation law.
The Air Law Institute was developed in San Diego in 2013 to advance the study of air and space at the intersection of engineering, law, and business. It was founded in the spirit of the original Air Law Institute established at Northwestern University in 1929.
"San Diego has a significant aviation presence, and knowledge of the field may be an advantage for our students as they seek employment," said Niels B. Schaumann, president and dean of California Western. "This arrangement benefits both the law school and the Air Law Institute, and we look forward to the collaborative center successfully advancing this area of study in our region."
"California Western has been critical in the rebirth of the Air Law Institute, and in graduating practice-ready attorneys to support the global aerospace industry," said Air Law Institute co-founder David Cain, the institute's academic committee chair, and a California Western graduate. "We look forward to developing a program hand-in-hand with California Western, and aim to increase opportunities for law students throughout the world by hosting our institute at their world-class law school."
About the Air Law Institute
The Air Law Institute was formed to advance the study of air and space at the intersection of business, law, and engineering. The Air Law Institute does this by partnering with centers of excellence in all three focus areas at the primary, secondary, and university levels to promote and fund educational opportunities for students.
The Air Law Institute also provides a forum for discussion by industry leaders on the issues facing the future of air and space law. The goal is to promote and provide a "farm system" of trained professionals ready to take on the very near and real changes expected in the next 10-20 years while allowing current practicing experts to help define the next segment in the arc of aviation history.
The Air Law Institute was founded in the spirit of the original Air Law Institute, established in 1929 at Northwestern University Law School to foster the development of American air law and provide information about air law worldwide.
