Three top San Diego law firms funded scholarships presented to California Western School of Law students at the recent Student Recognition Reception held at the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park.
Higgs Fletcher & Mack (HFM), a premier law firm in San Diego for nearly 80 years, awarded a diversity scholarship to second-year student Erika Rivas.
“Diversity and inclusion are important to the betterment of San Diego’s legal community, and Higgs Fletcher & Mack is committed to supporting programs and initiatives that will help to ensure a strong and diversified future generation of lawyers,” said Susan Hack, Chair of HFM’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. “Erika Rivas is truly top-notch—we are proud to recognize not only her law school work, but all she does to show her commitment to broadening her own legal education and strengthening the community and the profession.”
“Living through the struggle of violence in a low-income community is a testament that helping communities in need is more than a career to me,” said Rivas, a 2020 Juris Doctor candidate from South Central Los Angeles.
Antonyan Miranda LLP, one of the largest family law firms in California, awarded a scholarship to Lindsey Cherpes, an upper division student at California Western.
“Through our Antonyan Miranda Scholarship Program we want to promote, train, and encourage students to commit themselves to the practice of family law at the highest level,” said Ilona Antonyan, Founding Partner at Antonyan Miranda LLP.
“I am incredibly honored to receive the Antonyan Miranda scholarship,” said 2020 Juris Doctor candidate Cherpes. “I am truly appreciative of Antonyan Miranda’s incredible generosity and confidence in my abilities as I keep pursuing my dreams.”
Procopio, an AmLaw top 200 full-service business and litigation law firm, presented the Alec L. Cory Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service to third-year student Taylor McElroy.
“One of Alec’s passions as a lawyer was giving back to the community through the provision of free essential legal services to those who could not afford them,” said Jeff Isaacs ’68, current Vice Chair of California Western’s board of trustees, who worked alongside Alec Cory for many years as a partner at Procopio. “Toward that end, Alec, among other things, created the Alec L. Cory Pro Bono Award which is conferred annually at both California Western School of Law and the University of San Diego School of Law.”
“This scholarship will help me get one step closer to achieving my dreams,” said McElroy, who will be graduating in 2019.
More than 30 awards were presented at the annual event, which not only helps recognize and reward California Western’s most deserving students but also upholds the memory of many esteemed and beloved members of the California Western family.
