Procopio Presents Pro Bono Service Award to California Western Graduating Student

Abril Perez

Procopio, a full-service business and litigation law firm headquartered in San Diego, has presented a pro bono service award to Abril Perez, a graduating student at California Western School of Law.

The Alec L. Cory Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service is named after one of Procopio’s founding partners, Alec Cory, and recognizes a graduating student who best exemplifies Mr. Cory’s spirit of pro bono service to communities of need.

“At Procopio, we are proud of our commitment to providing pro bono legal services to those in need and we are proud to recognize Abril Perez for her outstanding work on behalf of underrepresented communities,” said Zagros Bassirian, an associate attorney with Procopio who received his Juris Doctor degree from California Western in 2014.

Graduating in 2020, Perez, who is from El Paso, Texas, spent her undergraduate years at the University of Texas where she graduated magna cum laude with a BA in English and American Literature, and an MA in Rhetoric and Writing Studies.

“I am honored to be the recipient of such a prestigious award and the extremely generous scholarship, without which I genuinely do not know how I would pay for my bar expenses,” said Perez. “It is a great privilege to be a lawyer and I plan on utilizing my skills and education to fight for the people who are unable to fight for themselves.”

Former Procopio partner, California Western class of ’68 alumnus, and current vice chair of their board of trustees Jeff Isaacs worked alongside Alec Cory for many years as a partner at Procopio. Isaacs noted that one of Cory’s passions as a lawyer was giving back to the community through the provision of free essential legal services to those who could not afford them.

The Alec L. Cory Pro Bono Award is conferred annually at both California Western and the University of San Diego School of Law.
