ILDJ Launches First Alumni Association in Latin America

California Western’s Instituto Latinoamericano de Derecho y Justicia (ILDJ)

California Western’s Instituto Latinoamericano de Derecho y Justicia (ILDJ) has launched the first alumni association in Latin America—Red de Egresados (Network of Alumni).

Since 2014, more than 500 lawyers have graduated from ILDJ’s Maestría en Derechio con Especialización en Litigación Oral(Master of Laws Degree, Specializing in Litigation). Red de Egresados, under the leadership of Director Justin Brooks, Associate Director Karen Sigmond, and Maestría Administrator Ruby Anaya, creates a network of Latin American lawyers committed to justice and service to others who exemplify the mission of ILDJ in their daily work.

“This Alumni Network has been created to keep our former students in constant communication with California Western and with the other lawyers who share this postgraduate degree,” said Sigmond.

California Western is the only law school in the continental United States to offer a law degree taught entirely in Spanish. The Maestría is a one-year hybrid residential and online LL.M. degree program focused on U.S. law, procedure, and trial advocacy skills necessary for the new oral trial system being adopted in Latin America.

“I am so proud that we have graduated more than 500 great lawyers with litigation skills needed to work within the new justice systems in Latin America,” said Brooks. “Our program continues to grow and improve, and the Red de Egresados will bring together all our graduates through events, meetings, and referrals, further strengthening our network.”

In January and February of this year, the first and second generations of Maestría alumni met on Zoom for two virtual events. More events are planned throughout 2021.

“It was wonderful to see our alumni and be able to reconnect and learn how California Western and the Instituto have had an impact in their professional endeavors,” said Sigmond. “I am looking forward to engaging with our other generations in the coming year.”

California Western through ILDJ has been deeply engaged in legal training and reform in Latin America for more than two decades. The Instituto has been very busy reaching out to partners in Mexico and other parts of Latin America, helping strengthen California Western’s name and reputation for academic excellence in the region.

Red de Egresados further enhances the education advantages of California Western’s ILDJ, encouraging lifelong connections among the many generations of graduates.

“The legal education that the Instituto has engaged in over the years is crucial to stabilizing Latin America’s justice system, and Red de Egresados is an integral part of providing this vital service,” said Brooks.
