“I feel very honored to have been selected for this award.”
California Western’s Professor India Thusi gives her first reaction to being nationally recognized as one of the ABA’s 2019 On The Rise–Top 40 Young Lawyers Award honorees.
The On The Rise program recognizes ABA young lawyer members who exemplify a broad range of high achievement, innovation, vision, leadership, and legal and community service.
“I have been working as a Co-Chair of the Academics Committee of the ABA Criminal Justice Section and really believe in the values that the ABA embodies,” says Professor Thusi.
Throughout her legal career, Professor Thusi has been involved in social justice work in different ways. As well as her work as an ABA Co-Chair, she has worked as a civil rights lawyer with the ACLU and worked on policy and advocacy with The Opportunity Agenda. Add to this her work as a professor at California Western and the many reasons Professor Thusi was nominated for this award become apparent.
“I’m honored to receive this recognition because you don’t engage in social justice scholarship and advocacy for the recognition. You do it because you're passionate about the issues.”
Professor Thusi believes that in being honored with this award, the ABA is recognizing the value of this kind of work and the people who are interested in these public interest and social justice issues. She will be accepting the award during the first week of August in San Francisco.
“This award will allow me to serve as a mentor and resource for students who are looking for jobs and connections to broaden their networks as I broaden mine.”
