Six California Western students were honored with this year’s San Diego La Raza Lawyer’s Association (SDLRA) scholarship awards at the SDLRA annual dinner and gala on October 16.
Being honored were third-year students Leah W. Gonzales, Luis M. Gonzalez, Arcelia N. Magaña, Cristal Ruiz, Priscilla Gamino, and Marisol Ornelas, who is president of California Western’s very active La Raza Law Student Association chapter.
“We award scholarships to deserving law students because we want to invest in our future,” said Jose Castillo, who headed the selection committee for La Raza Lawyers. “The committee selects winners based on contributions to the Latino community, financial need, obstacles students had to overcome, community service, and school performance. We believe that, as future lawyers, the scholarship recipients will lead and improve the Latino community.”
This is also the third year in a row Ruiz has been selected for a La Raza Scholarship.
“I am so appreciative for the SDLRLA's continual support,” said Ruiz. “I look forward to becoming part of the bar and contributing to such a wonderful organization.”
“I am honored to be one of the recipients this year and I am extremely proud of my fellow recipients, especially those from California Western,” said Magaña. “I believe, as one of the speakers mentioned, that being awarded the scholarship is like SDLRLA giving you a vote of confidence that you will succeed in the profession and to be given that kind of recognition amidst some of the legal community's most distinguished was truly amazing.”
Congratulations to the scholarship awardees from everyone at California Western!
