Higgs Fletcher & Mack (HFM), a premier law firm in San Diego for more than 80 years, awarded a Diversity Scholarship to Bichngoc T. Do, a second-year student at California Western School of Law. The scholarship is presented to the student who has demonstrated ethical and civic leadership and a commitment to providing services to underrepresented groups in the community.
Do’s commitment to diversity springs from her experience as a first-generation American whose family navigated a new country and language with the help of government programs. During her legal studies, Do has worked full-time as a litigation paralegal for the City Attorney of San Diego Civil Division, with upcoming plans to serve as a law clerk for the Attorney General’s Office and Judicial Extern for the California Court of Appeals.
Despite her demanding schedule Do has been a vital addition to the California Western community. She’s received numerous academic awards and won Distinguished Advocate at the 2021 Oral Argument Competition along with First Place in the 2021 Appellate Skills Competition. She’s active with the International Law Journal, Employment and Labor Law Society, Asian Pacific American Law Student Association, and the Women’s Law Caucus (WLC).
“I am incredibly honored to be one of the recipients of the Higgs, Fletcher & Mack Diversity Scholarship,” said Do. “Their generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I too will be able to help underrepresented students achieve their goals.”
2022 marks the 10th consecutive year HFM has awarded a Diversity Scholarship to a California Western student.
“To ensure a diverse legal profession in the future, it is vital that we aid law students from diverse backgrounds along the way,” said Susan Hack, Partner and Chair of the firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. “Bichngoc Do will be a wonderful addition to our profession, and we are proud to present her with our 2022 Diversity Scholarship.”
This year’s diversity scholarship was funded by contributions from HFM’s attorneys in addition to a contribution from the Firm. HFM was one of the first signatories of the San Diego County Bar Association’s Diversity Pledge and has pioneered positive change in the San Diego legal community through scholarships and community and other social programs to support the retention, education, and recruitment of underrepresented communities.
