Interlibrary Loan Basic Information:

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service enables CWSL students, faculty, and staff to borrow materials from other libraries which are not available in our Library’s collection. Before requesting an item through ILL, make sure it is not available in our Library by searching the KIM system ( See a Reference Librarian for assistance.
  • ILL is provided for current CWSL Law Students, Faculty & Staff ONLY. Attorneys & Alums can arrange for ILL services at the San Diego County Law Library.
  • ILL relies solely upon the cooperation and generosity of other libraries; therefore CWSL patrons must follow the rules & policies of the lending libraries when borrowing materials. ILL books MUST be returned promptly by the due date, otherwise you jeopardize our borrowing privileges from the loaning library for other CWSL patrons. The loaning libraries set the due date for ILL books, renewal requests to extend the loaned title need to be submitted four working days before the due date. It is entirely up to the owning library if the renewal request is allowed or denied.
  • The CWSL Law Library absorbs all ILL fee charges for our patrons. However, if an ILL item is lost or damaged the patron will be required to assume the cost of borrowing materials. The ILL Librarian will contact you if payment is required.
  • There are many variables in determining how long it will take for ILL materials to arrive; however, most requests are filled within one to three weeks. It is important to plan ahead when requesting ILL materials.
  • Note to law review students: All ILL requests for CWSL Law Review or ILJ must be placed through an editor.
  • Students will be notified by e-mail when their requested material(s) are ready for pick-up from the Library Circulation Desk. CWSL Faculty & Staff will have the ILL materials routed to their mail box for pick-up.

Interlibrary Loan Request Form

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code), governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement. CWSL Library reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order, if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
