California Western School of Law Presented the Inaugural Goyal Family Lecture in Public Policy Featuring Professors Brenda Simon and Eric Goldman

California Western School of Law proudly presented the inaugural Goyal Family Lecture
in Public Policy, a distinguished event featuring Brenda Simon, ProFlowers Professor
of Internet Studies, Professor of Law, California Western and Eric Goldman, Associate
Dean of Research, Professor of Law, and Co-Director, Data Center for High Tech Law,
Santa Clara School of Law , hosted by Fish & Richardson P.C.
The lecture, “Innovating in the Age of AI,” began with Professor Simon highlighting
biodiversity, which is essential to scientific discovery, particularly in modern therapeutics,
and the problem of its decline. Her proposal focuses on leveraging both the patent
system and AI to accelerate breakthroughs in natural products before these resources
go extinct.
Professor Goldman broadened the conversation by asking questions about the incentivization
of these markets, the capture of traditional knowledge, the role of the patent system
in innovation, and the use of AI to solve information asymmetries, which contributed
to inspiring compelling questions and discussion with attendees including that of
late-state capitalism, self-interest motivations in patents, and the value of preserving
traditional knowledge.
Thank you to Board of Trustees Member Kpish Goyal for his generous support, which
made the inaugural Goyal Family Lecture in Public Policy possible and to Fish & Richardson
P.C. and alumna Crystal Culhane ‘14 for hosting the event. Thank you to all the attendees
of the lecture, including California Western School of Law Board of Trustees Chairman
Michael J. Whitton.
