California Western School of Law rising 3L Colleen Murphy recently published an opinion piece in the Times of San Diego titled, "My journey from poverty and incarceration to a seat at the legal table."

Murphy reflects on her journey overcoming domestic violence, homelessness, untreated mental health challenges, substance use disorder, extreme poverty, and multiple incarcerations. She explains how pursuing education became the turning point that changed the course of her life.

"I chose education, not because it was easy or obvious, but because I needed something to hold onto that pointed toward a different future," Murphy writes.

Today, Murphy is dedicated to creating opportunities for others. She recently helped establish the System Impacted Law Student Association at California Western and serves on the Board of Directors for the Legal Aid Society of San Diego. Through her advocacy and leadership, she works to expand access to justice and support individuals impacted by the legal system.
