CWSL Clinic Comments on Copyright in AI Development
California Western’s New Media Rights (NMR) clinic recently submitted comments to the United States Copyright Office about legal issues surrounding the development of artificial intelligence.
The Copyright Office is currently conducting a study on Artificial Intelligence and copyright issues. Among these is the question of whether companies have the right to train AI using copyrighted material. The comments NMR submitted to the Office argue that these materials likely fall under fair use, and they consider the larger consequences of legislation concerning copyright and AI.
New Media Rights gives students hands-on training in internet, intellectual property, privacy, and media law while providing services to creators, entrepreneurs, journalists, and internet users. NMR is also regularly involved in advocating for government accountability involving the internet and new technologies. In this case, CWSL 3L and NMR student fellow James Thomas was heavily involved in the research and drafting of these comments.
